Pride Of Wisconsin Muskmelon History

A phenomenal upper Midwest heirloom introduced in 1937 by the Robert Buist Company of Philadelphia. When you think of the big melons with great taste, Pride Of Wisconsin is the standard that all others should be judged by. Our strain is excellent, the best available. Originally grown for the Milwaukee markets in the 1920’s.

Planting Muskmelons

If you have long, hot growing seasons, melons can direct-seed into garden. To ensure ripening in areas with shorter growing seasons and cooler weather, choose fast-maturing varieties, start plants inside, use black or IRT plastic mulch to warm soil and use fabric row covers to protect plants.

Direct-seed 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost when soil is 70F or warmer. Plant ½ inch deep, 6 seeds per hill, hills 4 to 6 feet apart; or 1 foot apart in rows 5 feet apart. Can plant at closer spacings if trellised. Thin to 2 to 3 plants per hill. Check out this article for more details on planting and growing muskmelons.

Preserving And Storing Melons For Later Use

Reliably produces heavy yields of 4-8 pound ribbed and netted cantaloupes. For best flavor, allow a melon to rest for a day or two before serving. Store whole ripe melons in the refrigerator for up to a week to avoid spoiling; cut melons will keep for up to three days. If you have ripe melons you can’t use immediately, dice or cut the flesh into balls and freeze for slushies or cold soup. Here are 7 great ways to use and store melons.
