How To Grow German White Garlic

plant German extra hardy garlic in fall about four to six weeks before the ground freezes. Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of at least 8″ and mix in some slow-release, granular organic fertilizer. Just prior to planting, break up the garlic heads into individual cloves, leaving as much of the papery covering on each clove intact as possible. Plant cloves 3″ to 4″ deep, orienting them so the pointy ends face up.

Water gently to settle the soil, and then cover the bed with a 4″ to 6″ layer of straw. Even as air temperatures drop, the soil will stay warm enough for the newly planted cloves to establish roots before the ground freezes. Sometimes you’ll see some green shoots form in fall; that’s fine and won’t harm plants. They’ll begin growing in earnest in spring. Next spring and summer, keep the bed weeded and watered.

Preserving And Storing German Extra Hardy Garlic Bulbs

Peel the garlic, making sure to discard any bruised or damaged cloves. Cut the cloves in half lengthwise, place them in an electric food dehydrator, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying. If you do not have a food dehydrator, you can dry the garlic in your oven. Make drying racks by stretching cheesecloth over the oven racks and securing it with toothpicks. Place the garlic on the racks and turn the oven to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours, then lower it to 130 degrees until the garlic is completely dry and crisp. Roasted garlic is a revelation. Have you tried it? When you roast garlic long enough, it transforms from pungent and crisp to mellow and soft. It’s irresistibly caramelized and spreads over bread like butter

Garlic Nutrition

Garlic is a plant in the onion family that’s grown for its distinctive taste and health benefits. German Extra Hardy Garlic contains sulfur compounds, which are believed to bring some of the health benefits. It is low in calories and rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6 and manganese. It also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients. Garlic supplements help prevent and reduce the severity of common illnesses like the flu and common cold. High doses of garlic appear to improve blood pressure for those with known high blood pressure (hypertension). In some instances, supplements may be as effective as regular medications.

Awesome Garlic. I plant them at the end of July…..beginning of August to harvest the next summer. Even with temperatures 20 – 30 below. The easiest to grow…..even here in Montana.
