Boston Marrow Squash (Cucurbita maxima) Extremely rare. The origins of the variety are a bit unclear; Others believe it was originally of Chilean origin. The first written history was when it was introduced to gardeners in 1831 by Mr. J. M. Ives. Excellent eating qualities, thick fleshed and free of fiber. A real custard-like, buttery flavor. Typical fruits weigh 10-20 pounds. Widely adapted. Good keeper. Vining,90-100 days.

Growing Boston Marrow Pie

Use rows covers to protect young plants from cucumber beetles and squash borers; remove covers when the plants bloom. Clean up refuse at the end of the season, and turn the soil in spring to bury insect pupae.

Freezing Summer Squash: Choose young squash with tender skins. Wash and cut in ½-inch slices. Blanch in boiling water for 3 minutes; cool in ice water for at least 3 minutes. Drain and package into freezer bags or freezer containers, leaving ½-inch headspace.
